A Guide to Non-Traditional Student College Scholarships

You may be wondering if you fit the profile of a non-traditional student. A non-traditional student is defined as someone who is returning to college after a long hiatus or beginning college for the first time at an older age than the average college student. Many students of this type have careers already established, have families to care for and have more obligations and responsibilities than the young first-time college student. If you are looking for non-traditional student college scholarships, you should know there are plenty of them out there.

A good starting place is the financial aid office of the college you want to attend. Your college or university may have an adult degree program that offers extra help to non-traditional students. In addition to scholarships you may also find programs that work with your busy schedule. Many older students attend college in the evening hours because they work during the day. If you already have college credits established from your previous time in college, they can often be applied to your current educational program.

In addition to scholarships, many non-traditional students can also get grants and loans to help pay for their university tuition. A grant is like a free gift that is awarded according to financial need. There are government grants such as the Pell grant, as well as grants from public and private foundations and organizations. While your financial aid office can help you apply for the government grants available, you may need to do some research before you are able to locate other types of grants. The second thing you may want to do is apply for a student loan. One example of a student loan is a Stafford loan. There may be other types of loans you can acquire, which the officer at your financial aid office can tell you about.

Unlike non-traditional student college scholarships and grants, student loans do need to be repaid. However, many of the student loans out there are not repaid until after your education is completed. You can even defer your payments if you experience times of financial hardship. If you have considered returning to college but think you're too old, or you cannot afford an education, you should definitely think twice. There are a great many programs made especially for the non-traditional university student.
