A scholarship is an award that is given to a deserving student based on various factors. Some scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need. Most every scholarship award is also based on other criteria such as grade point average, community involvement or extracurricular activities. There are sports scholarships, scholarships for particular areas of study, and minority scholarships. You will find scholarships from nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, private providers and public corporations like McDonald's and Coca-Cola. You can apply for as many scholarships as you want, and should do so. If you don't get one scholarship you may be approved for another.

Scholarship money ranges from a couple hundred dollars to thousands of dollars. The scholarships that award the most tuition money often have the most rigorous application process. Speaking of the application process, there are various things you must do. In addition to submitting your personal and financial information, you may be asked to write an essay and enclose letters of recommendation from counselors, teachers or employers. Most scholarships are applied for during the spring and summer months and awarded in early fall. It is important to read all the guidelines and get your application in before the deadline.

College student scholarships can be found by speaking to an officer at your university of choice, in addition to your high school college counselor. You may also want to check the Internet. You will find a large variety of information about many different scholarship programs online. Some of them can even be applied for online, although most require a postal mail submission. On the Internet, you will discover scholarships from certain companies, nonprofit organizations that give scholarships, websites which offer a directory of scholarships and so much more. When it comes to paying for college, information is your ally. You should do as much research as you can to make sure you are taking the best course of action where your university education is concerned.
