Are There College Scholarships for Students with ADHD?

ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a disorder that can affect anyone but most commonly affects young males. The good news is that this disorder can be successfully managed with medication, behavior modification or a combination of the two. If your child is preparing for college and researching scholarships you may be wondering if there are college scholarships for students with ADHD. The unfortunate news on this issue is that they are very sparse. While there are a wide variety of scholarships available to help students pay for their university costs, there are very few if any that are awarded specifically to those with ADHD.

You may want to investigate scholarships for students with learning disabilities. Some of these scholarships may encompass ADHD. One such scholarship is the Bank of America Abilities Scholarship Program. This program is only available in certain states and is awarded to learning disabled students with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Another scholarship is the Anne Ford Scholarship which is a substantial award for undergraduates with learning disabilities. Then there's the Council for Exceptional Children which also awards such scholarships to deserving students.

One of the best resources for researching scholarship opportunities is the Internet. You can find out a great deal of information about the above mentioned scholarships and many more online. Students applying for a scholarship should definitely apply for more than one because if they do not get their top choice they may get a different scholarship. There are scholarships that are given by public companies, private providers, colleges, universities and more. Some scholarships give out a small amount of money to many students, while other scholarships award a large amount of money to only one or two students.

In addition to looking for scholarships for students with ADHD, you should also apply for as many traditional scholarships as possible. In addition, you may want to investigate grants and student loans as well. Grants are free money for your tuition that are awarded yearly based on financial need. There are several types of grants available. Student loans, such as the Stafford loan, are granted to students on the basis of income and expenses and can vary in amount. With scholarships, loans and grants, it is entirely possible for a student to obtain a college education if their grades are satisfactory.
