How to Get College Scholarships for Handicaped Students

Every student is able to apply for a college scholarship, including handicaped students. College scholarships for handicaped students can be found in a variety of places. One good place to begin your quest is the guidance office of your school. Your guidance counselor can direct you towards lots of scholarship opportunities. If you have already began looking at colleges and universities, the advisors there may also be able to help. Scholarships are money for tuition that is awarded on the basis of qualification and merit. For example, a qualification for a disabled student scholarship is that you must have a disability, of course. However, merit is a bit more difficult to define.
Merit means you are deserving of the scholarship. Disabled students may also need to meet certain academic criteria in order to qualify for a scholarship. Scholarships are awarded in particular areas of study. For example, there may be scholarships available for disabled students studying medicine, law, science, math, social work, etc. Many programs are awarded based on a combination of need, academic performance, extracurricular involvement, leadership ability and community service. Different programs have different criteria. Another area that may vary from scholarship to scholarship is the application due date.
In addition to talking to an advisor, you may also want to search the Internet. There are web sites and databases devoted to scholarship programs for disabled students. You can find out how to apply for these programs on the web sites. Some scholarships are worth only a few hundred dollars, while other scholarships are worth a great deal more than that. The smaller scholarships are often awarded to many students, so make sure to apply for them in addition to the bigger ones.
College scholarships for handicaped students are not the only way to pay for a university education. There are grants and student loans available as well. Grants are given on the basis of financial need and available once per year. The amount of the grant depends on the financial need and the cost of the student's education. There are several grants available from the U.S. Department of Education that you may want to consider applying for. In addition to grants there are also student loans that can help students pay for the university expenses not covered by scholarships or grants.
