Scholarships and Grants for Minority Students

Scholarships and grants are now available for the offering to minority students. Minority students may include groups like African Americans, Native Americans and Hispanics, to name a few. There are specific scholarship programs designed for these groups. A good first place to start is your college advisor. If you are still in high school, you can talk to your guidance counselor who can help point you towards scholarships he or she thinks are appropriate for you. If you are the parent of a high school student, speaking to your student's counselor can help you understand the best ways to help your child get the university education they deserve.

Scholarships are awarded to students based on criteria like academic performance, extracurricular activity and community involvement. This is also true for minority scholarships. They are not just awarded to minority students, they are awarded to minority students who show merit. Different scholarships have different requirements. Examples of this includes the Minority Fellowships from the University of Chicago, Latino scholarships and grants from UCLA, African Studies Grants and Fellowships from the University of Pennsylvania and the GEM or Graduate Education for Minorities program at the University of Notre Dame. Grants are another great way to pay for university tuition. Grants are money that does not need to be repaid and are often awarded on the basis of income, educational expenses and financial need.
